You can download your own copy of Softy here. Some of the terms used - glyph, rasterize.

Voted! Nice font, always wanted to have a go at making one. The capital G looks a bit funny.

Ta! If you've got a scanner and some image editing software that can handle bitmaps, it's really easy using Softy. It's just repetitive and time consuming. As soon as I rasterized that text I spotted one or two other things I'll have a go at changing apart from the q, including the G and much of the punctuation but I was short of time so couldn't be bothered to change it just then. But yes, I agree, the G looks a bit funny - I think because it's not quite high enough, possibly because I've tried to make it trail below the line (as I have done with the also odd looking Q). I'll have a go at fixing it when I get back from Finland.

Yay - I'm officially happy then! But not sure how?

oh, have always wanted to make my own font and too lazy to find a way to do so.

Great that you can make your own, Dem. I like it except that in a long paragraph like the one you've posted, it's not very eye-friendly. But for shorter comics balloon texts it would be fine. I downloaded another try-out font software quite a while ago, can't remember the name, but when I uploaded the fonts I liked it did something weird to my computer so I quickly ditched it all. Most of the free fonts available are for PC, not Mac. But anyhow I've got too many already in my font library and want to get rid of a lot. Would be nice to make my own, if I had the patience.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I love your Magpie strip. Beautiful.

My internet has been down for a few days so for once I have an excuse for tardy comment replies...

lolabola - it's quite easy to make a font. Perfecting it is almost certainly a lot harder though.

Natalie - this was just a first go and I was pleased with it in that sense - it's certainly not the finished article and I'm not sure whether it would look good in comics either. I did find some free comic fonts that didn't cause problems and had Mac versions so when I get back I'll dig out the url and email it to you - I don't have time just now though. Don't worry about not being around much - my blog reading is somewhere between terrible and not at all at the best of times. I'm glad you liked Magpied.
